Painter & Iconographer
Elena Murariu was born on the 29th of June 1963, in Zvoristea, Suceava County, Romania. She began to study fine arts at the age of 10 at the School of Music and Fine Arts in Botosani. She continued her studies at the High-School of Music and Fine Arts “Octav Băncilă” in Iaşi. In 1987, she graduated the Institute for Fine Arts “Nicolae Grigorescu” (currently known as the Bucharest National University of Arts), section of Monumental Art – Restoration, led by Prof. Dr. Ion Stendl and Prof. Dr. Dan Mohanu.
In 1990, she participated with graphics works at the Romanian Artist Union Fellowship Exhibition and, also in 1990, she achieved her first personal exhibition at ”Vasile Pârvan” museum in Bârlad.
After a decade in which she dedicated herself to the mural painting restoration of important historic monuments, beginning from 2001, she constantly participated to group or personal exhibitions with icons on wood and graphics on religious topics. Her works are inherently influenced by the direct contact with the art of mural painting masters whose frescoes she was restoring, as well as the profound roots of Romanian and Byzantine faith and culture.
The artist has had numerous national and international exhibitions, becoming a well-known ambassador of Romanian orthodox art of icon. Thus, she organized personal exhibitions or attended group exhibitions in Romania - Bucharest, Cluj, Iasi, Suceava, Barlad, Otopeni, Arad, Ploiesti, Slobozia, Craiova, in Europe - Athens, Dion, Barcelona, Paris, Lisbon, Prague, Venice, St. Petersburg, Rome, Kiev, Belgrade and also in the US - New York.
Her paintings are considered to be full of originality and represent a new approach in the field of contemporary Byzantine art. Among her achievements there is the iconostasis of the church of former Cotroceni Monastery, dedicated to the “Dormition of Mother of God” (August 15) and to Saints Serghie and Vah (October 7), as a replica of the original iconostasis that is preserved at the National Art Museum of Romania.
